Lifestyle Inflation: Why Earning More Does Not Always Make You Richer

  Introduction Many people believe that earning more money will automatically solve their financial problems. A higher salary appears to promise greater security, more savings, less stress, and a more comfortable future. However, an increase in income does not always lead to an increase in wealth. As people begin earning more, they often start spending more. They upgrade their homes, cars, phones, clothing, vacations, subscriptions, and daily routines. Expenses that once seemed optional gradually become part of their normal lifestyle. This process is known as lifestyle inflation, or lifestyle creep. Lifestyle inflation happens when your spending rises as your income rises. Instead of using additional income to build savings, repay debt, or invest, you use most of it to improve your current lifestyle. There is nothing wrong with enjoying the money you earn.
